Basic feeding: protein and sugar
A healthy colony needs two food groups. Understanding the role of each one is the secret to active workers and a productive queen.
1. Sugars give energy
Carbohydrates are the daily fuel:
- Sugar water or diluted honey.
- Ripe fruit in small pieces.
- Ready-made solutions, if you prefer convenience.
2. Proteins drive growth
Protein feeds the larvae and sustains the queen's laying:
- Insects (crickets, mealworms, flies), killed and clean.
- Offer small portions, a few times per week.
3. Less is more
Excess food turns to mold and attracts mites. So:
- Offer little and watch the consumption.
- Remove leftovers before they spoil.
- Keep the outworld always clean.
Tip: note in AntNotation what you offered and when. Over time, you'll learn your species' favorite menu.
A well-fed colony is a strong colony! 🐜
